NICK SMITH
Nick Smith began playing Guitar before switching to Drums and Percussion. His primary focus for over 40 years has been free-improvisation, playing many times in London, also Chelmsford and Colchester. Initially a member of the London Musicians Collective, from there he was a founder member of the quartet Make Shift, along with Geoff Collins (Saxophones), Peter Urpeth (Piano) and Stuart Wilding (Percussion). Individually and collectively, they played with a variety of musicians including Sue Ferrar, Paul Rutherford, Phil Wachsman, John Russell and Lol Coxhill.
After a few years away from the music, Nick met up with Mark Wastell, and commenced a period of collaboration playing with musicians such as Rhodri Davies, Simon H. Fell and Richard Sanderson.
Nick has also had brief encounters in Jazz, Rock, Blues/Funk and Acoustic/Folk
In recent years he has turned his attention to using electronics and effects to extend/enhance the sounds of metal percussion such as Gongs, Cymbals etc. He has also developed an interest in using editing and mixing software to produce experimental soundscapes utilising samples, found sound and field recordings.
Nick is a member of the Essex based Resonance collective of electronic musicians, and occasionally sits in (usually virtually) with a number of local Jazz- based ensembles.
He has a number of interesting and varied one-off live events coming up, and is hopeful of organising a few locally himself over the next few months.
